Electric Vehicle Towing in Sugar Land, TX

Sugarland Quality Towing tows electric vehicles the way their manufacturers specify: on a flatbed, with all four wheels off the road. That means Teslas, Rivians, Mustang Mach-Es, Chevy Bolts and plug-in hybrids. Our operators put the car in Tow or Transport Mode, winch it from the factory tow eye, and use wheel skates when the car can't be put in neutral, so the motors and regenerative braking system never turn under load.

Sugarland Quality Towing provides electric vehicle towing in Sugar Land, TX and surrounding Sugar Land, TX cities, including Stafford, Richmond, Rosenberg, Pecan Grove, Fulshear and Meadows Place.

Tesla Towing

Tesla's owner's manuals call a flatbed the recommended way to transport its cars. They allow the wheels to roll only below 3 mph, for under 30 feet, while the car is being winched aboard in Tow Mode. We follow that exactly, using the screw-in tow eye stored in the front trunk.

Rivian, Mach-E, Bolt and Other EVs

Every brand names its mode differently (Tow Mode, Transport Mode, Neutral Tow). Tell dispatch the year and model, and the operator will arrive knowing the procedure for your car. Some trucks, like the Rivian R1T and Ford F-150 Lightning, are long and heavy enough that bed length and capacity matter too, so we size the flatbed before we dispatch.

Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid Towing

Hybrids have electric motors tied into the drivetrain too, and many are all-wheel drive. Unless your manual says otherwise, we put them on the flatbed. It costs a little more than a wheel-lift and avoids an expensive repair.

Dead 12-Volt Battery or Out of Charge

An EV with a flat 12-volt battery may not unlock, shift into neutral or wake its screen. We supply low-voltage power to wake the car, then load it. If the main battery is just empty, we'll tow it to the charger or home address you choose.

Damaged EV After a Collision

A crash can damage the high-voltage battery pack even when you can't see it. We tow damaged EVs on a flatbed and park them outdoors, away from buildings and other cars. More on crash towing is on our accident towing page.

Why Electric Vehicles Need Flatbed Towing

Pull a gas car by its front wheels and the rear wheels just roll. Pull most EVs that way and the wheels you leave on the road turn the electric motors. Moving motors generate current, heat builds up in parts that aren't cooling, and the damage may not be covered by warranty.

Motors Are Connected to the Wheels

There's no clutch or transmission between an EV's motor and its wheels. If a wheel turns, the motor turns. That's why manufacturers limit rolling to a few feet at walking speed.

Many EVs Are All-Wheel Drive

Dual-motor EVs drive both axles, so there's no "free" end to lift. A flatbed carries the whole car.

Weight and Low Battery Packs

EVs are heavy for their size, and the battery sits under the floor. We winch from the tow eye rather than the suspension or the battery's edge, and we use a bed angle that won't scrape the underbody.

Before Your EV Is Towed

Stay Safe, Then Stay in the Car if It's Safe

Turn on your hazards. On U.S. 59 or the Grand Parkway, stay buckled in unless the car is smoking or leaking. If you smell smoke or see vapor from a crashed EV, get well away and call 911.

Find Your Tow Eye and Key Card

Your tow eye is usually in the front trunk or under the cargo floor. Have your phone key and backup card ready, because the car may need to be unlocked and put in Tow Mode before loading. If you're locked out, our car lockout service page explains what we can do.

Tell Dispatch the Battery Level

Let us know whether the car still powers on and how much charge shows. It changes how we wake and load the car, and it decides whether a short tow to a charger will do.

Where to Send Your EV

Electric vehicles have fewer repair options than gas cars, so the drop-off address matters more. Settle it before the truck arrives, and the quote will already include the miles.

Manufacturer Service Center

For a warranty problem, the brand's own service center is usually the right stop. Several makers, Tesla included, expect you to open a service request in their app first. Do that before we load the car, so the center is expecting it and knows where we'll leave the keys.

A Certified Collision Shop

After a crash, ask your insurer or the manufacturer for a body shop certified on your brand. Tesla, for example, keeps a list of approved body shops. Not every shop is set up to handle a high-voltage battery or recalibrate the sensors and cameras on a modern EV.

Home or a Charger

If nothing's broken and the pack is just empty, the cheapest fix is a short tow to a charger or your own garage. Let us know whether your home charger is Level 2 or a wall outlet. A wall outlet can take a day or more to add real range.

Electric Vehicle Towing FAQs

Can a Tesla be towed with a wheel-lift?

Tesla says a flatbed is the recommended method. Wheels-down towing risks overheating and damage that the warranty may not cover. We only tow Teslas on a flatbed.

How much does EV towing cost in Sugar Land?

Most local tows around Sugar Land run $85 to $175. EVs always ride on a flatbed, which costs a bit more than a wheel-lift. After-hours calls typically add 25% to 50%. You get the itemized number before dispatch.

Will you tow my EV to a charging station?

Yes, if the battery is simply empty. Tell us which charger or address you want. We'll confirm it has a working stall that fits your connector before we drop you off.

Does my warranty or roadside plan cover the tow?

Many EV makers include roadside assistance while the car is under warranty. Check your app first, then call us if their wait is too long or they don't cover your situation.

What if my EV won't go into neutral or Tow Mode?

That happens with a dead 12-volt battery, a locked screen or crash damage. Tesla's manual says self-loading dollies or tire skates must be used in that case. We carry skates and load the car so its wheels never turn on the way up the bed.

Do heavier EVs like the R1T or F-150 Lightning cost more to tow?

Sometimes. A long, heavy electric pickup may need a larger flatbed than a sedan does. We size the truck from the year and model you give us, and that's built into the quote before dispatch, so there's no surprise at drop-off.
